Wisdom and Affluence

Jim Leffel
James 5:1-6

James warns his audience of the danger and deception of riches. The rich are exposed for their selfish hoarding of goods, the unsatisfying pursuit of material gain and their exploitation of the poor and oppressed. Affluence offers us two opportunities: 1) selfishness or stewardship; and 2) hoarding or trusting God with our material wealth.\r\n

Stewarding our Sufferings

Gary DeLashmutt
Colossians 1:24

We all suffer; what does God say about it? Gary DeLashmutt talks about how we can be a good steward of our sufferings. He talks about how through the cross God has made redemptive suffering central to His plan and His glory. DeLashmutt talks about why we can view our sufferings as a precious resource as well as how we can manage our sufferings to God's glory.\r\n

The Stewardship of Affluence

Jeff Gordon
1 Timothy 6:6-19

What is wealth, and is it good? Jeff Gordon gives a cultural perspective, as well as a Christian perspective on wealth and affluence. Using Jesus's life and view on wealth, Gordon gives us ways to lead regarding wealth.\r\n

Why the Waste?

Scott Risley
Matthew 26:1-16

The story of Mary pouring out her expensive perfume on Jesus to anoint him before his burial is still being told for almost two thousand years, just as Jesus predicted. The Lesson we can learn from this is nothing that we pour out on Jesus is a waste. Most people won't understand, but Jesus sees it differently. "Have our eyes been opened to see the preciousness of the One whom we are serving?...that nothing less than the dearest, the costliest, the most precious, is fit for Him?"

Trusting God with Big Decisions

James Rochford
James 4:13-17

Major decisions are not morally neutral. In this passage, the author, James, gives an example scenario to show how to reason in decision making. One principle is to consider the immediate reward and principle two considers the ultimate reward. God gives us every reason why we can trust Him in decision making.

God or Money

Scott Risley
Matthew 6:19-34

Living in this modern era it is easy to believe that anxiety about money is normal, but God calls it a sin! Instead, store up treasures in heaven by investing in your own spiritual growth by focusing on following God who loves and cares for you. If your treasure is in God, your heart will follow. You can either live a life filled with anxiety or you can seek first God's Kingdom and enjoy Him for eternity.

Learning the Secret

Scott Risley
Exodus 17:7

Paul discovered the secret of contentment. He learned that lust will deaden our souls and Jesus alone offers true contentment. That contentment should overflow in generosity, starting now.

Preventing End of Life Tragedies

Jeff Gordon
Exodus 17:7

Dr. Jeff Gordon shares his experiences with the issue of end of life care in America. The hidden truth is that every year, Medicare spends billions of dollars in just the last few months of care for patients, which really can be argued is just a prolonging of death. Jeff discusses the probability of living after certain end of life illnesses and tragedies and the reality of what this "care" looks like. It often is more humane to let death take people naturally when the time has come instead of pouring countless dollars toward adding a few more days, weeks, or months in an uncomfortable hospital environment. As Christians, we can have hope after death and take legal actions now to prepare ourselves for the medical care we would like to or not like to receive at the end of our lives.

The Gospel and the Paradox of Success

Jim Leffel
Mark 10:17-31

When the rich young ruler comes to Jesus with amazing self-confidence in his own righteousness, he asks Jesus what he must do to be saved. Jesus shows him how high the bar of the Law really is to God. The gospel states that no religious system can save us, but that God offers us His grace as a free and undeserved gift. God does want success for us in terms of wealth, but in a life of following Him.
